Cold Steel Recon 1 Spear Point Review

Posted on February 24, 2021July 27, 2021 by Jeffrey

The No products found. is a folding knife with 2’’, 3’’, and 4’’ inch spear point blades. Like all other Cold Steel knives, it is made of the highest quality materials and it is manufactured using cutting-edge technology, proprietary procedures, and rigorous quality control and testing. Below is a detailed review of the Cold Steel Recon 1 and its manufacturer.

What Is Cold Steel?

Cold Steel has been in the knife making business since 1980. They are most famous for their tanto knives. Cold Steel aggressively markets their knives via conventions, social media videos, and mainstream media, and why wouldn’t they? The look, the feel, and the performance of their knives are highly prized even among military personnel.

Salient Features of the Cold Steel Recon 1 Spear Point

The blade is made of Japanese AUS 8A Stainless steel. It is then finished with a black Tuff-Ex™ Coating. The handle utilizes a G-10 Griv-Ex grip. For safety, it utilizes the never-failed-before Tri-Ad lock™. Currently, there are 3 variants:

  • 2’’ micro recon 1
  • 3’’ recon 1
  • 4’’ recon 1

Recon 1 Spear Point Expert Reviews

Most experts are awestruck by the manufacturing process that the Cold Steel Recon 1 goes through. First, the Japanese AUS 8A Stainless steel is vacuum heat-treated. Then it is sub-zero quenched. It is then coated with Tuff-Ex in order to provide protection and maximum slide. The grip is etched to simplistic G-10 laminate scale perfection. This provides lots of grip and looks great.

Experts agree that the design can be applied for tactical, outdoors, and even everyday use. Considering the materials and the manufacturing process, $40 to $60 is a steal (pardon the pun). The warranty is also considerate. Since this is a folding knife, there is a 1-year warranty. Just keep the original receipt.

Recon 1 Spear Point Consumer Reviews

First is the look. Consumers always fall for edgy-looking knives that look dangerous even when sheathed, or in this case, folded. The design, grip, and non-reflective finish fit the criteria well.

Second is its utility. For a knife that has a 2 to 4-inch blade, this can cut through things bigger knives can’t. Part of the reason is the curved design that allows you to cut with ease. Next is the finishing coat that also acts a lubricant, meaning you encounter less resistance when you cut. Also, you have a firm grip, allowing you to exert maximum force. This knife is a very popular survival knife as well.

Third is its folding mechanism. The ball located near the base of the knife acts as a grip for folding and unfolding. It also serves as an additional guard when pushing down to cut. The Recon 1 Spear Point also utilizes the Tri-Ad lock™. This means it does not fold or unfold by accident or through unintentional force.

Fourth is its carry-all design. In this regard, the ambidextrous clip is a welcome design inclusion. It is a little bit on the heavy side, though.

If there is anything bad that can be said about this knife, it’s how hard it is to unfold, at least initially. You have to get used to the angle and the design, but you can get used to it.

Overall Rating

We give the No products found. a rating of 4.5 out of 5. If you know your stuff, then the $40 to $60 price tag is not really an issue. The type of steel used, let alone the treatment, was overkill! However, the problem is cheaper manufacturers can one-up Cold Steel in terms of pricing. Other than that, there is really no substantial defect or issue with this knife.
