Fiskars X7 Hatchet Review

When you are in the woods or at home there is always a need for a little multi-purpose hatchet.  Hatchets are great for chopping smaller pieces of wood, as well as prepping kindling.  The Fiskars X7 is a great hatchet for an even better price on Amazon.

Fiskars 378501-1002 X7 Hatchet

This hatchet is for anyone who frequently finds themselves chopping smaller pieces of wood, including logs.  I have worked with this hatchet and was quite impressed with how quickly and efficiently it chopped through the log I was working on.  The log was approx. 27 inches in circumference and I chopped through it against the grain (beaver style) in less than eight minutes!  It was amazing. This hatchet could also be for you if you enjoy playing, owning or collecting sharp, sweet looking tools.

Durability

Fiskars built this hatchet to be durable.   It has an inseparable Permahead insert-molded head that prevents overstrike breakage; this also makes it so the head of the hatchet will not loosen.   The X7 model also has a shock-absorbing duraframe handle that is lightweight and stronger than steel.   This helps prevent damage from overstriking.   The Fiskars X7 Hatchet is impressively durable, especially for the affordable price.  The advanced geometric design,   super-sharp edge of the blade and the nearly unbreakable handle allows this hatchet to last as long as you do.   When I was holding the hatchet in my hands, the length of the handle compared to the weight of the head felt well balanced.  I was looking at the area where the handle and the head meet and I expected to see a seam where it was connected but instead, I saw a seamless tight connection.

Blade and Sharpness

The head of this hatchet is made out of hardened, forged steel.  This allows the edge to stay sharper longer than the typical hatchet blade.  The blade is also made to be low friction as it is coated with a coating which helps the head of the hatchet to loosen easily if it becomes stuck in the wood that is being chopped.   The blade goes through a grinding process that gives it the ability to make cleaner cuts and better contact.  When I was chopping through a log just for a test round, the chips were flying, the blade would sink in and tear that sucker apart.  I even tried the traditional V-style chopping versus just chopping the snot out of it.  Yes, the v-style was more effective…BUT even just chopping regularly I would have probably made it through the log in under 10 minutes.

Handling and Grip

The handle is hollow inside, which at first made me very nervous; once I started using it, however, I realized that my fears were unfounded.  I was sure that first contact with the wood would snap the handle but I was so pleasantly surprised to find that there was no buckle or weakness at all.  I even had to stop and look at it to see if it was actually hollow because it was so strong.   As well as impressive strength, the grip is amazing.  The handle is smooth, yet at the same time, it has a great grip.  My hands were not sliding all over the place when I was chopping.  Because it was so smooth it also helped prevent blisters from starting.

Competition

One hatchet that may be a competitor to the Fiskars X7 is the TEKTON 3284 20-Ounce 14-Inch Fiberglass Camp Axe.  This hatchet also has the forged heat treated steelhead on it.   The handle is a 50% fiberglass core for added strength, with soft rubber grip on the handle for added comfort during use.   Even the price is comparable to the Fiskars X7.  Check out this link to find the price of the TEKTON Camp Axe on Amazon!

Pros and Cons

There are a lot of pros to this hatchet.  It has great weight balance between the head and the handle.  The blade cuts deep with every stroke, maximizing the power you put into the strike.   The head is tightly attached to the handle.  As for every aspect of what a hatchet should be, the Fiskars X7 is fantastic.

While I have been writing this I have been trying to think of a couple cons and these are the best ones I could come up with.   It is orange.  If you don’t like the color orange then you might not like this hatchet.  Also if you want something that is big that will chop big logs then this isn’t what you are looking for.

Conclusion

The Fiskars X7 is a great hatchet for many purposes and comes in at a great price.   I have been very happy with the X7 that I own.  It is comfortable in the hands and it produces great results.  I would definitely recommend the X7

  1. Make sure you get it from Amazon, because the one at Home Depot don’t have the sheath. It comes with some sort of plastic temporary blade cover
