Knives can be difficult to ship. The maker will usually offer a guarantee for your knife but it may still get lost in the United States Postal Service. When you ship your knife be sure that you have a way to track your knife’s path to its destination. This will prevent a loss if the mail carrier is at fault. When shipping knives you should always insure the package for the value of the knife.
USPS Sucks for Knives

Many shippers have found that the United States Postal Service is unreliable when it comes to shipping knives. There is no implicit exemption for knives but reviews online have stated that USPS tends to lose knife shipments. This is why most choose to ship with FedEx or UPS so that they can track their package. It is important to disclose the contents of the package when you are shipping a knife. FedEx gives a detailed inventory on an individual basis. The type of the shipment must be known before the shipping charges can be figured out.
How to Package a Knife Shipment
The knife in question should be secured within the box that you are using to ship it in. Many times bubble wrap and packing peanuts are helpful in securing your shipment. There is a big advantage to using FedEx. They have a variety of services available at your disposal. A few of the services include arranged delivery, specific delivery times, and Saturday delivery. This can make it very easy to follow your package for tracking purposes. If the package is missed they will hold it for you for a specified amount of time until you are able to pick it up. FedEx gives the receiver the ability to allow anyone to sign for the package. They even make sure that the person is over the age of 21 who receives the package. (Best tactical tomahawk).
Shipping Knives on Flights
If you are out of the country when you purchase your knife, you can bring it home with you even with the strict rules on airlines since the 9/11 tragedy. The best way to get your knife home is to put it in your checked luggage. Do not try to bring it with you in your carry-on luggage. You will lose your knife if you do this. You will be able to bring your knife home with you if you pack it in your checked luggage. (This balisong knife rocks and it is not a Benchmade).
Conclusion
FedEx and UPS offer services that the USPS does not. This is why it is necessary to ship all of your knives through FedEx or UPS. They will accommodate any special instructions as well. So, I ordered a knife, a 3 in karambit, from a Chinese store, the app I used has given me updates on the knifes travel. So far it’s been sitting in JFK for over a week, could customs have seized it or did usps loose it, I just want to know wether or not it’s still coming or not.
Hi. Im from philippines can i order a knive in amazon.com and have it send to philippines
Is there any laws against mailing a butterfly knife? I live in Oregon and I bought one to give to my boyfriend who lives in Washington and I rather not get in trouble if I try to mail it to him.
I wanna give my boyfriend a pocket knife, like a new one, in the store packaging, SOG knife, as a gift, but he lives in Arizona at the moment. Im in Texas, what do yall recommend i send it through?
UPS or FedEx
I make cedar knife boxes specificially for this purpose (pandpwood.com) and will make them whatever size you wish. In the U.S. In my shop. With Ohio-grown and Ohio-milled cedar from small family operations.
Woodworkers like knifemakers–you might even be able to work out a nice deal if you’re willing to sharpen their tools 🙂

How old do I have to be to ship a knife? I’m a young maker under 21
I haven’t seen any limitations on shipping due to age.
Thanks you answered my questions about shipping a knife and have a better idea now.
One other question if you ship a knife do you need to take your package down to the office or just put contains sharp object?
Check with the carrier you use. They will let you know whether a visit in person is necessary, however, from what I can see there is nothing that says you have to do either with UPS or FedEx.
And just now been told by Fed Ex they wont ship knives either!
I just received a USPS package I sent myself because I was flying home. The package arrived but the knife was not inside. The box was in fine shape so someone opened it and took it out. I can’t believe that is legal! This was a sentimental knife given to me by a family member and I’m so upset about it.
I’m under legal age and my girlfriend in Georgia has an issue with a guy joking about raping her can I ship a switchblade while under legal age to a person under legal age?
I mailed a package domestically through USPS with a dagger-shaped letter opener inside among other things, and package arrived very late, torn open with everything gone EXCEPT the letter opener. Even the sheath was missing. I’m not happy.
That would totally tick me off for sure! Unfortunately, there are no guarantees in the shipping business, and even with the same service provider, something can work perfectly one time and then cause a huge pain the a$$ the next time – no consistency. That’s the nature of the beast worldwide!

I ordered a knife through Wish. The shipper was from San Francisco. The package arrived cut open and sealed with tape saying received unsealed with the postmasters initials. This is very disappointing because the way the package was opened it is obvious the knife was stolen. Won’t be ordering knives through the mail again.
UPS representative has just informed me they dont ship knives- because they are classed the same as a firearm!.
I have had great success shipping knives via USPS, hundreds each month. They are the only game in town, in terms of low cost. UPS and FedEx are great, but they can’t match their pricing when it comes to domestic shipping.
All I hear from my follow knife collects is that if you ship anything of value through UPS, and it is insured, the odds increase exponentially that your knife will be stolen… WTF do they care. It is insured, someone will get their money back if they can win their insurance claim…..
